Why HBCUs Outside?

While HBCUs have been the backbone of Black leadership development in America, through systemic underfunding, these institutions often lack the outdoor recreation resources, programs, and professional pathways that are standard at predominantly white institutions (PWIs). That disparity sustains a cycle of exclusion that prevents many HBCU students and alumni from enjoying the outdoors and offering the benefits of Black excellence to this trillion-dollar industry.

The cycle of exclusion:

  • Limited access to outdoor programs at HBCUs

  • Cultural barriers and stereotypes about who "belongs" in nature

  • Lack of representation in outdoor industry leadership

  • Poor pathways to careers in the outdoor sector

  • Economic obstacles to participation

By focusing specifically on HBCUs, we're addressing systemic barriers at their root. Our approach isn't just about creating access—it's about reshaping narratives, transforming institutions and corporations, and building sustainable paths for generations to come.

"There are many stigmas in the Black community regarding the outdoors... One of my biggest goals is to introduce more students to experiences they’ve never had before. I imagine the perfect outdoor experience to sound like laughter, look like joy, and feel like new adventures."
